Future Palace on their first trip to Australia: Maria Lessing talks Resurgence and Good Things
On September 22, Future Palace singer Maria Lessing spoke to Hi Fi Way. There is no new single. The band’s fourth album, Resurgence, came out on July 31 via Century Media: 12 songs, about 42 minutes. The interview is about their first trip to Australia.
Good Things runs December 4 at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, December 5 at Sydney Showground, and December 6 at Brisbane Showgrounds. All three dates are 16+. Future Palace have no Australian headline of their own. They support The Devil Wears Prada on December 2 at Lion Arts Factory in Adelaide and on December 8 at The Triffid in Brisbane. The flight comes about a week after their own German headline tour. Lessing says it will be winter at home by then, and the job is to stay healthy for the trip.
The Berlin trio formed in 2018: Lessing on vocals, Manuel Kohlert on guitar, Johannes Früchtenicht on drums. Before Resurgence came Escape (2020), Run (2022), and Distortion (September 6, 2024, No. 32 in Germany) on Arising Empire. They have been on Century Media since 2025.
“It feels like we’re getting seen. There are moments where it feels like running on a treadmill. You somehow sometimes don’t see the process, and this is a moment where it really feels like yes, this works, hard work pays off. It is so rare for German bands, especially our size, to make it out here and to cross the seas. It’s a very big milestone for us personally.”

A festival slot is shorter than a club set, but she still wants the same core on stage: the mental health issues she lives with, her traumatic past, and equality for women in the industry. She describes the show as a place where those things can be said out loud.
“Everything you say out loud, your brain believes is real. I sing a lot of negative things, but I wanted to create a positive album also for myself. Singing Cyclone, the chorus ‘I won’t rewind back to the cyclone of grief and fright,’ these things are very powerful and make me feel hope as well. With The Echoes of Disparity, when I scream to all the women in the crowd and say, ‘I wanna hear all the women,’ I see their faces, their anger and also their happiness that their pain is mentioned on stage. There have been moments where I felt absolutely pathetic because I couldn’t believe what I was saying myself. I would communicate that. Still, we want to believe in a better future. That is what Future Palace is about.”

Cyclone is a Resurgence song; the single arrived back in September 2025. The Echoes of Disparity is from the previous album, Distortion. Lessing says Resurgence followed Distortion so closely that she told the band it was impossible: she was burned out, losing her voice, and unsure she had a future in the group. On Distortion she kept the clean vocals tame because touring had scared her. For the new record she went to a vocal coach so she could sing loud and high again and still last a tour. They made the whole album with one producer they had only worked with in pieces before, in a different city. She calls it the most fun she has had making music in a long time. She feels the same about the record as she did in July: she can decide her vocal is solid and, a minute later, that it is the worst thing she has ever heard. Overall, she still likes the album.
Limp Bizkit headline Good Things. The bill also includes Spiritbox, The Devil Wears Prada, Bilmuri, and P.O.D. Lessing says she has never seen Limp Bizkit live, and she also wants Polaris, The Devil Wears Prada, Neck Deep, Bilmuri, The All-American Rejects, and Simple Plan. The band is there for several days, and she plans to pick one other set each day.
